Our November training session for Ko Dan Ja was conducted by our Kwan Jang Nim and Black Belt Magazine's "Man of the Year, H.C. Hwang. He has again graced us with his extensive knowledge of the Soo Bahk Do™art. The session also graced us with visitors from the United Kingdom, Hedges Sa Bom Nim and one of his students, who were in the country visiting. Kwan Jang Nim taught an interesting session based on our theme for the session by giving us the excellent opportunity to move through intermediate positions while practicing our basic ki cho and hyung.
Our practice theme based on Kyum Son (key concept of humility), had Ko Dan Ja connecting mass by turning the hip to increase distance. As the Kwan Jang Nim put it, "we are all familar with this concept". Stressing the physical application as well as the philosophical application through basic ki cho utilizing the intermediate position to connect our physical and philosophical application to technique.
The session continued with more Moo Do valued instruction and practice from kicking with basic front kick to hyung practice, again using the sub theme of "takes time". Intent, open, close, mass, acceleration, were the key words of instruction to bring our awareness levels higher, in order to bring physical and philosophical application into practice.
I can only state that the experience of training with the Kwan Jang Nim, to me, is complex, but you can actually start to feel how the art should be practiced, and you strive to model your seniors through instruction and practice. Thank you Kwan Jang Nim for your instruction and dedication to Soo Bahk Do™ art Moo Duk Kwan™ style.
